We are proud to announce that our institute’s director and professor of molecular ecology, Maarja Öpik, has been elected as an academician in the field of soil science by the General Assembly of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.
As an academician, Maarja aims to strengthen dialogue between science, society, and policymakers, advocate for better research funding, and promote ecological literacy. She emphasizes the importance of integrating scientists into decision-making processes and increasing the presence of PhD-level experts in government.
In her research, Maarja highlights the critical role of soil biodiversity and arbuscular mycorrhiza in food production. She is committed to helping farmers understand the value of soil health and biodiversity for sustainable agriculture.
